Getting Back on the Exercise Wagon

Kate Marsh Lord is the mom of three young and very energetic kids: a 5 year old son, a 3 year old daughter and a “surprise” bonus baby boy born in March of 2012.

I’ll be the first to admit there are several things I do not like about summer (lack of routine, moving, extreme heat and humidity). However, for the most part, the good things about summer far outweigh the bad, and the vast majority of goodness has to do with the ability to enjoy the outdoors.  And, frankly, taking family walks, playing with the kids and just hanging outside is about all the exercise I get these days.

A few months ago, I set a lofty goal for myself: to run a 5k on my 35th birthday. This would be a major accomplishment for someone who hasn’t run a mile since I was about 23 years old. I was on track, feeling proud of myself, making progress and then move happened. As a result, I’ve totally fallen off the Couch to 5k training wagon. The move just totally disrupted everything about my life and I haven’t found the time to work out. (Unless cuddling a baby counts as exercise. And, yes, that photo was taken in the SUMMER in Germany, AKA it’s always sunny and 65.)

I’m trying not to beat myself up about it, because more than anything I’m just sad. I’m sad that I’m not investing in my own health like I should. I’m sad that I don’t have that time to myself. And I’m sad I’m not going to meet my goal. One of these days I’ll get back out there. Even if out there is now the very hilly German trails we live near and not the very flat neighborhood sidewalk from Alabama. Yikes! But, I will meet my goal sooner rather than later. I want to do it for me, but I also want to show my kids that I value myself and my health enough to make the time to exercise.

In the meantime, I’m enjoying the German way of life, which includes lots of walking. And, hey, walking while wearing a 17 pound baby counts as some form of exercise, right? Not only is this low impact exercising, but it’s also just full of goodness. The fresh air, the blue skies, the beautiful scenery. It’s a nice counterbalance to the stress of adjusting to our new life. And it will be lovely to take in as I tackle the 5k training in my new future!

I think you're doing a magnificent job! You'll finish that 5k at some point and when you do it will feel great, but until then there are a lot of other things to feel amazing about too. I think the walks you're taking with the three kids look a whole lot more fantastic than a solo run! :)
