Meet Jessica: Motivated Manhattan Momma
What challenges did you experience while nursing and how did you overcome them?
I find that my greatest challenges in regards to breastfeeding stem from the middle of the night routine. My 7 month old wakes up every 2 hours for whatever reason, and I always nurse and he falls back to sleep quickly. The problem I'm seeing now is he isn't able to get himself back to sleep without nursing, so I'm stuck with not knowing the next steps I'm comfortable taking yet. I'm hoping this is something he grows out of on his own.
What has been your proudest moment as a nursing mother?
My proudest moment was realizing with my first born that I actually managed to work through our initial struggles (and there were many, many painful and difficult times with him) and nurse him successfully for 11 months. That was, and continues to be something I consider my greatest achievements as a person and a mother.
What is your favorite memory as nursing mother?
My favorite memory was with my third baby. We took him on a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge for our first time when he was only a couple weeks old. I actually nursed on the bridge, and when I think of that it feels like the culmination of us as parents, and as a family through our journey in NYC.
What insight or information would you share to define your personal success as a nursing mother?
I would have to say that my personal nursing success is highly attributed to the fact that I've always nursed on demand, and I work from home. Two things that I know not all women are able to do for various reasons.
Where did you find the greatest support while nursing?
The one thing that I consistently kept in mind when I was struggling to nurse my first was that my body was designed to bear and feed children. For some reason, that kept me going. There was no reason that I shouldn't be able to successfully nurse my babies, so I kept on pushing through. Eventually we both got the hang of it, and my two youngest have reaped the benefits as well, as nursing was (and has been) a breeze comparatively with them. I love it, even though it is a physical strain sometimes.
