New Year Breastfeeding Goals
Posted By: Jennifer Johnson
I didn't grow up around breastfeeding moms. In fact, I grew up making formula bottles for my little sisters.
I've surpassed so many of my breastfeeding goals. I wasn't sure if I'd even be able to breastfeed, much less without supplementing with formula for as long as I have. I'm happy to say that I've made it six months and still haven't even depleted my frozen stash. It hasn't been easy but I've done it!
Since we're starting a new year I'm thinking of things I want to get better at these next six months of breastfeeding, assuming things continue to go well.
I want to keep pumping as much as I am, if not more, when I'm at work so I can keep from depleting the rest of my stash.
I'd like to talk to more women about breastfeeding and join a La Leche League.
But most of all, I want to improve my confidence about breastfeeding.
One thing I want to have more assurance about is breastfeeding in public around my husband. We've been leaving the house more as a family and I can tell he's still nervous and uncomfortable with my nursing Lil J in public, so I get nervous and uncomfortable. My daughter is also more distracted by the world than ever so it makes it more difficult to keep covered.
I want to talk more openly with him about it, help him to see how it's normal and natural, and give him suggestions as to how he can help me when we're in that situation. Before having our daughter he was my main supporter in encouraging me to breastfeed. I'd like him to be the same way about me breastfeeding her when we're outside of the house.
This year I also want to trust my body more. I'd like to not doubt myself when I pump less one session. Instead of stressing out about it, I need to stay confident in knowing I'll pump more the next time. I always do.
I want to spend these next six months enjoying breastfeeding - the good and the bad - because this won't last forever. This is a once (or twice or three times) in a life experience, and something not every woman gets to experience, so I want to relish this blessing.
This year I want to cultivate my confidence about breastfeeding because -- who knows -- maybe we'll even go longer than the year we planned!12:00pm on Tuesday January 18
