How will my bra size change during my pregnancy and throughout my breastfeeding experience?
Although every woman is different, here are the changes you should expect on average:
Pregnant: Expect to increase 1 to 2 cup sizes and 1 to 2 band sizes.
Nursing 6-8 Weeks : Your cup size will increase another 1 to 2 cup sizes from your pregnant size.
Nursing 8+ Weeks: Band size will decrease to pre-pregnancy size. Cup size will be 1 cup size larger than your pre-pregnancy size.
Looking for more information? Read our Simple Guide to Sizing, which walks you through all the changes you should expect.
I'm pregnant. When should I buy a nursing bra?
best time to buy a nursing bra is when your pre-pregnancy bras are no
longer comfortable. Most women purchase their nursing bras during
their third trimester, however, some women need extra comfort and
support earlier on in their pregnancy.
To get the best value, we suggest you purchase a nursing bra that is made with soft stretchy fabrics such as the Original Nursing Bra, The Body Silk Seamless or The Essential Nursing Tank. Each of these nursing bra styles fit beautifully while you are pregnant because they are made with breathable stretchy fabrics and are durable to continue wearing while breastfeeding.

This is my first baby and I have no idea what to buy. What would you recommend to start out with?
We recommend purchasing 2 nursing bras, and 1 nursing tank. To transition from maternity into nursing we recommend:
You’ll be thankful in those first few weeks to have a few comfortable bras on hand. Your breasts may leak milk (at night time) and in the morning you’ll have a clean one to put on. Both the Original Nursing Bra and the Body Silk Seamless are wire free and offer the comfort, shape and support you’ll crave while pregnant and on your journey of nursing success.
The Essential Nursing Tank has our proprietary built-in-bra which makes it perfect to wear as a maternity top, a layering piece or as a lounge wear while pregnant and nursing. A two for one value because this tank fits beautifully over your glowing belly while pregnant, and after birth it continues to offer discreet tummy coverage, support and shape as you begin your nursing journey.
Why do Bravado bras fit multiple cup and rib band sizes?
Our bras are specially designed using stretchy fabrics to accommodate fluctuations in cup size. Our bras are specially designed for nursing breasts and each of our bras offers our proprietary shape, comfort and support features to help make your nursing journey a success.
When you are pregnant your body and bra size fluctuates and changes as your baby grows. After birth, your body prepares for a successful nursing journey and your bra size fluctuates again. The majority of women experience an increase of two cup sizes up from their pre-pregnancy bra size. If you do not experience a change in your bra size don’t panic, this will not impact your nursing success. The size of your breasts is not related to the amount of milk you can produce.
Not only does your bra size change throughout your pregnancy but also throughout nursing. Heck, in the first few weeks of nursing your cup size can fluctuate hourly. Trust us when we say you’ll need a bra that will provide you with some extra room for your beautiful changing shape.
I'm in-between double cup sizes (e.g. CD). Which size should I purchase?
Let’s say, for example your measurements are a 36C/D. Should you purchase a 36B/C or a 36D/DD? This question applies to our Bliss Nursing Bra, Sublime Nursing Bra and Allure Nursing Bra. We recommend the following:
- If you are pregnant then purchase the larger cup size of the two
- If you are 0-3 months nursing then we suggest you purchase both sizes to find the perfect fit (we offer 45 days to return or exchange)
- If you are 4-6 months nursing then we suggest you purchase the smaller cup size of the two
I'm nursing, should I measure myself when my breasts are full of milk or right after a feeding?
Measure yourself when your breasts are full to make sure your nursing bra will not constrict your breast tissue when you are engorged.
Why do lactation consultants recommend cotton nursing bras?
There are two reasons why cotton nursing bras are recommended in the early stages of nursing:
- Breathable fabrics reduce the amount of moisture that builds up in your bra and helps prevent infection.
- When you are nursing your internal body temperature is approximately 1.0 degrees higher. Having a bra made from a breathable fabric will help you keep cool.
Bravado nursing bras are designed using breathable fabrics for your optimal breast help.
Is it safe to wear an underwire bra while nursing?
If you wish to wear an underwire bra while you're nursing - an underwire nursing bra is best.
An underwire nursing bra lifts and supports breasts using a wire channel that sits under your bust. Some women experience pressure on their milk ducts that may lead to a treatable breast infection called mastitis but nevertheless wearing an ill fitted underwire nursing bra can complicate your nursing success.
Some women experience no pressure on their milk ducts and prefer an underwire nursing bra which is why we’ve designed the Allure Underwire Nursing Bra with an wide round wire that is shorter than the under-bust channel to minimize pressure and constriction. Although some moms love wearing Allure while pregnant and during the early stages of nursing – we recommend this bra 6-8 weeks after birth when your nursing routine is well established and fluctuations in weight are less frequent.
Why do you need a sleep nursing bra?
A sleep nursing bra is for night time support and nursing. Wearing this bra helps reduce back pain, sagging and stretch marks on your chest because it holds you in place all night. Our sleep nursing bra is made of 92% buttery soft cotton which is breathable, super comfortable (no hook and eyes) and holds your breast pads in place throughout the night. Our proprietary comfort-flex is designed especially for nursing breasts, is wire-free and accommodates fluctuations in size, shape without constricting breast tissue especially in the immediate weeks after birth.
A sleep nursing bra is essential as soon as your pre-pregnancy bras are feeling tight (about 6 months) and right after birth when establishing a nursing routine with your new baby.
(If you're looking for an alternative our nursing tank is also great to sleep in.)
Do you sell gift cards?
No, we do not sell gift cards at this time (however, the Body Silk Seamless makes the PERFECT baby shower gift).
