I can’t believe it’s already Thanksgiving. A year ago, I was pregnant. We were living in Alabama. A family of four.
So much has changed in only one year. Max is here. We live in Germany. A family of five.
Because our life changes with such fervor – and, as a military family, it literally changes year to year – I think it’s important to build traditions and other ways to maintain a sense of normalcy no matter where we are.
Our Thanksgiving tradition isn’t particularly earth-shattering or even time-consuming, but I’ve done it since I was a child and I love it. At Thanksgiving dinner, we go around the table and say what we’re thankful for. Simple, I know. But it’s important to me and I hope the kids will always associate the (however brief) moments of kindness and gratitude shared at the table with our family Thanksgiving.
At Christmas time, no matter where we are, the kids receive a pair of pajamas Christmas Eve. We all put on our pj’s and hang out and the kids grow giddy with excitement for Santa’s upcoming arrival. And Christmas morning, no matter where we are or what’s prepared for breakfast, I make those delicious (and totally goofy) cinnamon rolls from a can. I always had them as a childafter opening presents and I can’t give them up!
Do you have Thanksgiving, Christmas or other holiday traditions? Please share because I’d love to add more to our family!
