Our 6 Month Nursing Anniversary

Baby Skylar and I have met our 6 month nursing goal. You have no idea how happy I am. My new goal is to continue as long as we can.

Looking back, I will say that it wasn't easy. I had to really work on Skylar's latch, positioning and building my milk supply. I drank loads of nursing tea and took enough fenugreek that I smelled like maple syrup. I nurse on demand -- and boy, is there a lot of that! My older kids became used to me walking around with a breast showing. Skylar is with me all day so I fit breastfeeding in around family activities. For example, I make dinner for my kids, nurse and then make dinner for my husband and I and then nurse again while my husband puts the kids to bed. And it's been worth it -- the antibodies are so good for my babe.

Now that Skylar is 6 months old, he's more interested in the world around him, but our nursing sessions vary. Sometimes he still wants long leisurely sessions, curled up on his nursing pillow, in our favorite easy chair. Other times we can get it done within 15 minutes per side. I've nursed at places I'd never imagine: press/blogger events, the supermarket (while the baby was in a carrier, covering myself with my jacket), and most recently, on the subway! If he's hungry, I'm going to feed him no matter where we are! I even nurse around my father and father-in-law. It's part of my life and I am not concerned with what other people think.

Night nursing is still my favorite and I've gotten better about putting him right back in his co-sleeper when he's finished. Otherwise, Mr. Skylar would happily nurse all night. I nurse him around 2 hours at night and always seem to wake up nursing him. I wonder if he's really hungry or just wants some comfort but I don't mind either way. That said, we are going to transition him to his crib in the spring -- I have no clue how that's going to go.

I got what I wanted – to nurse my baby and I couldn't be happier. I feel like we're on the right path and I am excited to see how far we can go.
